For many women, the camera has traditionally been a tool used by others to define us. Stepping in front of the lens can feel vulnerable; we are often confronted by an "Inner Critic" we know all too well. But what if we could slowly move from critic toward witness? What if we could begin to look at ourselves not to judge, but to understand?
The Compassionate Lens is a workshop designed specifically for women to reclaim their narrative through the art of self-portraiture. Moving beyond the superficiality of the "selfie," we explore self-portraiture as a form of visual medicine—a way to process our stories, honor our bodies, and speak our truths.
Led by fine art photographer Manuela Thames, this workshop balances the technical mastery of photography with the healing effects of the creative process.
What we will explore:
Using writing assignments to uncover the themes, memories, and emotions that are ready to be visualized.
Learning to navigate equipment set-up, camera settings, and the practicalities of achieving focus when working alone.
Studying the work of influential female self-portrait artists for inspiration, learning how they used the lens to navigate their own identities and stories.
Diving into the use of light, shadow, and movement to create evocative imagery that reflects who you are.
Shifting from "posing" to claiming the frame, using props and locations to tell a deeper and honest story.
Through a combination of technical guidance, writing assignments, creative prompts, and personal feedback, you will learn to use the camera as a tool for awareness, connection, and compassion. Join us to transform the way you see yourself and create images that resonate with your experiences.
